Growing up, I always dreamt about one day traveling the world. I never actually though it would happen though. I mean.. I come from a small town in Iowa, so how did the country of El Salvador even come about?

When I met my boyfriend roughly about five years ago, I knew he was hispanic for sure due to his dark complexion, but I never actually met someone who came from the country of El Salvador. To be honest, "El Salvador" wasn't something I ever even thought about until we met! Once we started dating I was immediately gravitated into everything from his culture to his language to what kind of food he ate. In the beginning, I just thought he was like all of my Americanized Mexican friends from school who thought they were cool because they sprinkled Tajin on everything they ate and always had a bag of Takis in their locker... Boy was I wrong. I learned everything from what Horchata was to the "correct" way of eating pupusas. I soon realized the it was normal to have "frijoles con arroz" as a side with every meal and when someone ever offered me food no matter how full I was, to always accept!

He was born in El Salvador, but his parents quickly made the decision to leave everything that they have ever known to come to America when they found out he was profoundly Deaf in order to give him a better life. I quickly realized that he came from a family with a background of hard workers. His grandparents who he dearly loves still reside in El Salvador but visit once a year.

Five years later, and we are still together, I never thought of having the chance to experience his country with him for the first time since he left at the age of four. His father made a last minute decision of taking us all to El Salvador for the holidays. And thats when the nerves kicked in...!
